Best in show

Stump, with handler Scott Sommer, after winning. (Barton Silverman/The New York Times)

This beautiful Sussex Spaniel won the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show for 2009.

Stump (Ch Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee) is no ordinary, run-of-the-mill dog show winner. He is the oldest Westminster Best in Show winnner at 10 years old, which is approximately the equivalent of 70 human years. Imagine how successful a 70-year old human would be in a beauty contest. If that wasn't enough, Stump also came back after 5 years out of the show ring. In 2004, his life was almost cut short by a mysterious medical condition. Up until now, he has been living the life of a well-loved house pet and will be returning to that after his duties with Westminster Dog Club have finished.

  1. He is just divine ..... had a cocker spaniel myself years ago, delightful friend, mad as a hoot, used to have to sit on my knee when I went to the loo .... strange but true!

  2. If you own what I call a 'velco dog', you'll never go to the watercloset alone again.
