My very first drawing

I did this by following the first exercise in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, which has collected dust on my bookshelf for eons. It was published in 1979. A high school art teacher, who used it for his classes, recommended it. He confidently asserted that, by following the exercises in the book, anyone could learn how to draw.

Betty updated the book under the title The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and there is also a workbook available called The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook: Guided Practice in the Five Basic Skills of Drawing.

  1. Are you kidding that this is your first attempt? Wow. Beautiful line drawing!

I had no idea she had a workbook. I may have to check that out.

  2. No, not kidding. I just followed her instructions for observation of surfaces.

  3. I believe that anyone can draw. Show me a toddler that doesn't want to draw when they have the chance. It's embedded in our psyche to create and to express ourselves. We don't have to learn "how to" draw, we have to learn "how not to" draw. Whether that's taught by unsupportive parents or teachers, or enforced by our insecurities about the fact that there will always be more skilled artists than us, a lot of people have forgotten their natural ability to draw and to express themselves. Kudos to you for reconnecting with that aspect of yourself!

  4. Your first! How fantastic! Tapping into new talents and pursuits is so rewarding, good for you. Thanks for stopping by my site, by the way! I'd love to hear more about how vegetarianism is going for you :-)
